Sciatica: how massage can ease the pain

Sciatica is the name for pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg. It follows the path of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. The pain can be a dull ache or a sharp, shooting line, and it often comes from muscles pressing on or around the nerve.

How massage can help

When the muscles of the lower back, the glutes, and the back of the leg are tight, they add pressure and keep the area irritated. By releasing that muscular tension, a massage can reduce the pull around the nerve and give the area room to calm down. For many people this brings real, welcome relief.

What to expect

I take time to find the tight, tender zones and work them at a pressure your body accepts. The goal is not to force through pain but to let the muscles soften. Some people feel lighter after a single session, others need a few over a couple of weeks.

When to see a doctor first

Massage helps the muscular side of sciatica, not every cause. If you have severe or sudden pain, weakness in the leg, numbness, or any loss of bladder or bowel control, see a doctor without delay. When in doubt, a quick medical check first is always the right call.
